birkin vs jelly birkin
What the term means, where it came from, and what is actually being compared.
"Jelly Birkin" is a phrase that comes up a lot in handbag searches and on social media. It is not a real product category, and no jelly bag is a real Birkin. This guide is an honest explainer for anyone who has typed the phrase into a search bar and is trying to work out what they are actually looking at.
What people mean when they say "jelly Birkin"
On TikTok, Instagram and shopping sites, the phrase "jelly Birkin" is used loosely to describe any structured, top-handle handbag made from translucent or glossy plastic — usually TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) or PVC (polyvinyl chloride) — whose silhouette reminds people of the original Hermès Birkin. It is internet shorthand, not an official term. Nobody calls it that in a shop.
The real Birkin
The Birkin is a leather handbag designed by Hermès, named after the actress Jane Birkin, and produced by hand at Hermès workshops in France. It is made from leather (or in special editions, exotic materials), uses Hermès hardware including the signature turn-lock and sangle straps, and is sold only through Hermès. Prices typically start in the five-figure range and rise sharply with size, leather and finish. The Birkin's shape and hardware are protected by trade dress.
A jelly bag
A jelly bag is a plastic handbag — most often TPU or PVC — with a glossy, slightly wobbly finish that looks like jelly or gummy sweets. It is sold by many independent and high-street brands at a fraction of the price of a leather designer bag. Jelly bags come in many shapes: small clear pouches, scalloped totes, structured bucket bags. The category is defined by the material, not by any single shape. See our explainer on what a jelly bag is for more.
Side-by-side: what is actually different
- Material. Birkin is leather. A jelly bag is plastic (TPU, PVC, or silicone).
- Maker. Birkin is made by Hermès. Jelly bags are made by many different brands.
- Hardware. The Birkin's turn-lock, cadenas (padlock), clochette and sangle straps are specific to Hermès. Jelly bags use generic clasps, magnetic closures or simple top zips.
- Price. A Birkin typically costs five figures and up. A jelly bag typically costs £100–£300.
- Availability. Birkin sales are managed by Hermès with long waitlists. Jelly bags are usually available to buy directly.
- Care. Birkin leather needs conditioning, storage, and protection from water. A jelly bag wipes clean with a damp cloth.
Are jelly bags "dupes"?
Some jelly bags are explicitly marketed as Birkin-inspired and copy the silhouette closely, sometimes including imitation hardware. We do not make one of those. The Jelly Firkin Bag is a bucket-bag shape with a top handle. It shares a category (top-handle structured bag) but not the specific lock, strap and shape that make a Birkin a Birkin. It is its own thing.
About the name
A firkin is an old English unit of volume — historically about a quarter of a barrel, used for beer, butter and other goods carried in small wooden buckets. We chose the name because we make a bucket- shaped bag and a firkin is, literally, a small bucket. We are an independent UK brand and are not affiliated with Hermès in any way.
What to do with the information
If you are searching for a Birkin and have the budget for one, Hermès is the only place to buy a real one. If you are searching for a structured, glossy bag with a top-handle silhouette at a more accessible price, you are in the world of jelly bags — and there are many to choose from. Ours is at firkin.world; the materials breakdown is on the TPU vs PVC page.
